We built the production pipeline, world bible, and character system behind an original comic series set in a small poker town where the blinds never go up and nobody ever learns.
"Brightridge didn't just help us build a pipeline, they helped us build a world. Fifteen characters, six story arcs, a whole town. And a system that actually lets us ship every week without losing our minds."Ray Zorfold
Rocky Rivers is an original comic series created by Shaun Mackey and Ray Zorfold, a character comedy set in a small working-class American town where everybody plays poker, everybody owes somebody something, and the next hand is always the one that finally turns it around. The concept was airtight. What didn't exist yet was the infrastructure to actually make it real, character bibles, a visual identity system, a world bible, and a production pipeline that could ship every week without burning the whole thing down.
Brightridge came in as the production and world-building partner. We helped develop 15+ characters across three leads and a full supporting cast, designed six interlocking story arcs, built the storyboarding and approval pipeline, and established the cadence that turned a great idea into a publication-ready property.
The WorldBill manages a restaurant and plays poker like he's almost figured it out. His post-hand analysis is as detailed as it is wrong. Bob works the counter at a country store and beats that theory on pure instinct without even trying. They've been best friends for years. They've been losing money together just as long. Bob's dog Larry has solved poker, every hand, every spot. Bob has never asked. Larry has never forgiven him.
Beyond the three leads, we built out a full roster: Sketchy Rick runs the dodgiest game in town. Sheriff Sherry has a badge, a hat, and total confidence, none of it has helped. Poker Karen has the bankroll to make everyone's life a problem. Sergei owns a pigeon. It watches things. The world these characters live in is specific enough to feel real, loose enough to let the stories breathe, and designed to scale across publishing, animation, trading cards, branded content, and licensing from day one.
Production PipelineWeekly publication sounds simple. It isn't. Without a clear pipeline (who does what, by when, with what assets, through what approval steps) a creative project stalls fast. We designed a full production workflow from concept to publication: script → rough storyboard → panel layout → review → final art → lettering → publish.
Each episode starts with a structured brief: setup, punchline, character beats. The writer's script drops into a shared workspace with context for art direction.
Rough panel thumbnails are reviewed before any final art begins. Framing, pacing, and visual storytelling are locked at this stage, not after the fact.
We integrated AI tools into the rendering and color consistency workflow, helping maintain visual continuity across artists and episodes at a faster cadence.
Typography, bubble placement, and final panel composition are standardized across every strip. Readers get a consistent visual experience every week.
Assets are prepared and queued for the editorial CMS. Strip goes live on schedule, every week, with no scrambling at the finish line.
Every episode, character reference, and background asset is organized and version-controlled so new contributors can get up to speed fast.
Rocky Rivers isn't just a comic strip, it's a complete IP designed for publishing, animation, trading cards, branded content, and licensing. The characters are locked, the world is documented, and the production system is ready to ship. What happens next is the only open question.
A good character is an opinion. A good IP is a system. The difference between a creative idea and a scalable property is documentation, character bibles, tone guides, canonical lore, and a production pipeline that doesn't depend on any one person remembering how things work. We built all of that before a single strip shipped, and it's the reason Rocky Rivers can scale across formats without a redesign.
We help creators build the world, the pipeline, and the infrastructure to ship consistently at quality.
