We built a real-time EKG simulator for a Warner Bros. feature film starring Will Smith, a live, interactive heart monitor that ran on set and responded to the emotional pacing of the scene.
In 2007 we built an interactive EKG simulator using Adobe Flash to generate live heart monitor visuals for a film scene featuring Will Smith. The production needed on-screen medical telemetry that could respond to the emotional arc of the performance in real time, not a static overlay added in post, but a living, breathing system that the director and crew could control on set.
The BuildThe tool gave the production team direct control over heart rhythms, waveform patterns, and vital sign readouts as the scene played out. When the tension escalated, the monitor responded. When the scene demanded calm, the readings followed. Everything the camera captured was real, generated live, frame by frame, without relying on compositing or post-production effects.
At the time, this was powered entirely by rule-based logic and hand-tuned animation curves. No machine learning, no generative models, just a system designed to be responsive enough that the output felt organic on screen.
